In a remarkable display of financial prowess, a team from the School of Business and Law (SBL) clinched second place at the international inter-university competition Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge. This prestigious challenge provides students the opportunity to present investment recommendations for publicly traded companies.
ECU selects up to two teams yearly for the CFA Institute Research Challenge, which the CFA Institute and the CFA Society Perth jointly organize. This year, the ECU team, consisting of Luong Nguyen, David Scallan, Bradley Stewart, and Semadi Khomo from the Finance, Corporate Finance, and Financial Modelling units, analysed and recommended investments for Pilbara Minerals (ASX: PLS), a leading lithium and spodumene producer in Australia.
The intensive two-month competition offers students a unique opportunity to receive guidance from distinguished academics and industry professionals. The ECU team had the privilege of interviewing John Stanning, Chief Development Officer of Pilbara Minerals to gain valuable insights into the company’s operations. Additionally, they developed their knowledge of mining company valuation through the support from this year's sponsor, Argonaut.
Participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge is an enriching experience for students, through the application of seamlessly blended principles from accounting, finance, and business strategy. The competition also serves as an incubator for students to hone their report preparation and presentation skills, preparing them for the financial world’s demanding challenges.
“We are proud to see our students achieve a high standard in this competition, winning second place at the local final this year,” said SBL Finance academic mentor Dr Jaime Yong.
The accomplishment of the ECU team stands as a testament to their dedication, analytical prowess, and ability to make sound investment recommendations. It reinforces ECU’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to excel and gain real-world experience in the financial sector.
