A team of inventive students from Edith Cowan University's School of Business and Law (ECU SBL) showcased their innovation and excellence with a unique water saving solution at the regional semi-finals of the Sustainable Hospitality Challenge in Bangkok.

The Sustainable Hospitality Challenge provides a global platform that aims to advance sustainable practices in the hospitality sector and empower future leaders to develop solutions that that enhance operational efficiency while promoting sustainability.

The team captured the judges’ attention with their pitch for a water-saving reverse osmosis system that significantly reduces operational costs for hotels. They received exceptional feedback for their performance and innovative ideas to reduce costs, conserve water, and enhance sustainability in the hospitality industry.

Dr Judy Lundy, Management lecturer and Director of the Master of Business Administration Program at ECU SBL, expressed her pride in the team's accomplishments: "This success reflects our students' ability to translate academic theories into real-world solutions. It underscores the pivotal role of education in nurturing future leaders who drive sustainable innovation."

The team comprised of Selvan Pooshandrom, Tosin Ogunmekan, Tia McQueen, and Mikayla Fricker—a blend of postgraduate and undergraduate students representing various SBL programs across three different degrees. For them, the Hospitality Challenge was a transformative experience: “It was so rewarding to see our ideas being heard on an international stage and to contribute to the global conversation on sustainability in hospitality." said Selvan.

As the hospitality industry evolves, initiatives like the Sustainable Hospitality Challenge play a critical role in fostering innovation and sustainability. The impressive performance of the ECU SBL team not only underscores the potential of students in creating sustainable solutions but also sets a hopeful precedent for current and future students to contribute to impactful initiatives and drive positive change worldwide.
