Be Safe – an Enactus ECU and Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club collaboration on Beach Safety

On Saturday, 14 September, more than 170 international students and volunteers gathered at Mullaloo Beach for a Beach Safety session and barbecue, co-hosted by Enactus ECU and the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club (MSLSC). Students from Tokyo City University (TCU) and Zhejiang Normal University (ZNU) chaperoned by 40 ECU Buddies, participated in the event to learn important beach safety skills delivered by 15 MSLSC volunteers.

The Be Safe program first launched in 2019 to help address the frightening statistics regarding drownings at Australian beaches. In their National Drowning Report 2024, Royal Life Saving Australia indicated a rise of 16% in drownings over the past year, with one in four being people born overseas.

The Be Safe program gets international students participating in an informative and interactive session learning the essential skills needed to safely enjoy Perth’s stunning beaches and outdoors. This includes basic first aid, understanding surf lifesaving signals and services, being sun smart, and recognising dangerous land and sea animals and what to do in the event of an unfortunate encounter.

The event culminated in a typical Aussie BBQ (hot dog and soft drink), delivered by Enactus ECU and ECU staff and student volunteers.

Be Safe not only highlights the importance of beach awareness for international students unfamiliar with local beach conditions but also fosters community engagement among students and volunteers alike.

"We are incredibly grateful to the Enactus team and the volunteers for giving up their Saturday to support this vital initiative," said Enactus ECU Faculty Advisor Nickey Ludkins.

"It’s more than just an information session, it’s the connections the students build and shared passion that makes the experience more meaningful for everyone involved. And we may have saved a few lives along the way!”

This event is part of Enactus ECU’s ongoing effort to promote student welfare and safety, and has been delivered 4 times since February 2023.
