Students from Edith Cowan University’s School of Business and Law (ECU SBL) have represented Australia and claimed a global victory at the DigiEduHack Marketing Mavericks Simbound Hackathon 2024, demonstrating their marketing expertise on an international stage.

Competing against teams from Romania, Italy, India, Belgium, Senegal, Tunisia, and the Philippines, ECU SBL was the only Australian team to compete, ultimately securing a well-deserved win.

The seven-hour hackathon challenged participants to manage marketing campaigns for an online retailer selling tablets. Teams were required to make real-time marketing decisions across various channels, including Search Engine Marketing (SEM), email marketing, community engagement, and affiliate marketing, with the goal of maximising profits over four rounds.

ECU’s winning team, comprised of Ferdinand Yeung, Serene Huynh, and Zhanna Seitenova, was guided by expert mentor Dr. Violetta Wilk. Their success was driven by strategic insight, data-driven decision-making, and a deep understanding of digital marketing.

“Students applied the digital marketing skills and knowledge they’ve learned in their digital marketing studies, to a case study scenario. They had to think under pressure to determine the best digital marketing strategy and tactics, to secure the highest profit at the end of the four-round simulation”, said Dr Violetta Wilk who teaches the Applied Digital Marketing postgraduate unit at ECU SBL.

“They persevered over the 7 hours, they worked as a team, they discussed, researched and ultimately made the right digital marketing decisions to win the simulation”.

The students appreciated the chance to flex their knowledge and put their skills to the test.

“The Hackathon was an amazing experience! It gave us the chance to dive in and turn the concepts we've learned in the Applied Digital Marketing Unit into innovative marketing solutions. It was an unforgettable opportunity to put my knowledge to test.” Said Ferdinand Yeung, who is about to graduate with a Master of Marketing and Innovation Management and has secured a job in the SBL Communications team.

The event, which utilised the Simbound marketing simulator, allowed the students to showcase the skills and knowledge acquired through ECU's Applied Digital Marketing unit, developed by Dr Wilk. This impressive win underscores the School of Business and Law’s commitment to producing highly skilled digital marketing professionals.

The ECU team's victory is not just a significant achievement for the students, but a proud moment for Australian education on the global stage. Their hard work, creativity, and digital marketing expertise have proven that Australia and ECU School of Business and Law can compete with the best in the world.

Congratulations to the ECU School of Business and Law team on their outstanding success!
