The competition was fierce, the innovation was bold, and the stakes were high as ECU’s MMIS Capstone Project Competition brought students and industry leaders together for a night of strategic, student-led business solutions.
In an exciting evening of competition and collaboration, the top eight student groups from our Master of Management Information Systems (MMIS) Capstone Project unit showcased their semester-long capstone projects, at an event held at ECU Joondalup Campus.
This event brought together students, faculty, and the industry partners who supported the student projects, to decide which project was the most inspiring, successful, and impactful.
The night began with an introduction from unit coordinator, Mr. Keith Fitzpatrick, who congratulated the students on the successful completion of their projects and recognised their efforts in developing solutions with real-world applications.
Mr. Fitzpatrick praised both the students and the invaluable contributions of the industry partners, noting that this partnership is instrumental in preparing ECU graduates for career readiness.
The eight finalist teams then took turns presenting their projects that addressed real business challenges their host organisations faced. The solutions included an innovative 3D virtual warehouse for sustainable inventory management, streamlined business reporting using Power BI, and an enhanced interagency communication framework for domestic violence cases in collaboration with WA Police.
After each presentation, guests had the opportunity to cast their votes and rate each project on several criteria. Using a QR code system linking to a Microsoft Form, the audience scored projects based on criteria like business benefit, risk assessment, and innovation.
During intermissions, guests enjoyed networking and refreshments while the final scores were tallied.
In a suspenseful “Pop Idol”-style elimination, the final four teams were announced, with third and second place awarded before the winning project was crowned.
Super Project Alpha took first place with its groundbreaking researcher storage and query system developed on Monday.com, showcasing the power of teamwork and collaboration. The winning team received the coveted trophy as industry partners, faculty, and students celebrated in the foyer over refreshments, marking the end of an inspiring night of innovation and achievement.
Trophies aside, all of our students were considered winners for their commitment to their projects and for the real work experience they gained and industry connections they made through the unit.
This event underscored the importance of industry-academic collaboration in shaping the next generation of professionals, with ECU’s School of Business and Law fostering industry-ready students equipped to drive change and innovation in the workforce.
