Yesterday, the ECU gymnasium was filled with excitement—not for a sports match with fans cheering for Team ECU, but for a Careers Fair . Students crowded the space, eager to explore job opportunities, network with industry professionals, and gain insights into their future careers. The event served as a valuable platform for students to connect with potential employers, ask questions, and learn about various career pathways.
This year, the Schools of Business and Law, Science, and Engineering collaborated to create a Fair that catered to a diverse range of students. This partnership brought together vendors from various industries, including government agencies, sustainability organisations, and accounting firms.
Acting Executive Dean Professor Ben Farr-Wharton visited the Fair and remarked on the importance of these networking events "This Careers Fair provides an important opportunity for our Business and Law students to connect with prominent employers."
"The warmth of our students at this event, and their enthusiasm to make a meaningful impact through their future careers will help fill important workforce roles in Western Australia and across the world."
The collaboration between our three schools leveraged their strong industry connections and the interdependence of their fields. Many vendors—from cybersecurity companies and public sector organisations to banks and mining firms—were actively seeking graduates with diverse skill sets spanning business, law, engineering, and science. Bringing these disciplines together under one roof not only provided students with a more holistic understanding of how businesses operate but also reinforced ECU’s reputation for producing high-quality graduates in the eyes of employers.
Another example of this interdependence was our hospitality vendor, Marriott, a major employer with hotels worldwide. While they primarily hire managers and hospitality students, they also require project managers to oversee construction projects, engineers to maintain their properties, and cybersecurity experts to protect their computer systems.
In addition to the fantastic networking opportunities available to students, the event also featured information about Work-Integrated Learning programs offered by all three schools. Allowing students to discover how internships in their field of study could enhance their employability before graduation.
"Our students, through their studies, undertake significant Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activities to strengthen their competitiveness in the job market." said Professor Farr-Wharton.
Industry Relationship Manager Arron Jackson also highlighted how many of our vendors were ECU Alumni “It was great to see so many successful ECU Alumni representing so many of the top tier organisations in Perth. It reminds our current students that a degree from ECU sets the sky as the limit for their graduate career success.”
As the Careers Fair ended, students left with valuable insights into the opportunities available after graduation and a clearer understanding of the steps needed for academic and professional success. For some, the event was an eye-opening experience, revealing career paths they had never considered. With new connections made and fresh perspectives gained, the Fair proved to be a crucial stepping stone in their career journeys.
