Dr. Jigang Bao is a Chair Professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Programme, specially appointed by the Ministry of Education of China, and the Dean to the Graduate School and School of Tourism Management at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.
He is an elected Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and a Founding Fellow of the International Association for China Tourism Studies for his outstanding contributions to tourism research in China, tourism geographies, and sustainable tourism development.
As the Director of the Center for Tourism Planning and Research (CTPR) and the UNWTO Monitoring Center for Sustainable Tourism Observatories (UNWTO MCSTO), Prof. Bao’s research interests and tourism industry consultations are focused on theme parks, urban tourism, tourism community participation, and tourism governance. He has published over ten books in Chinese and English and more than 200 journal articles including those published in top journals like Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, Journal of Travel Research, Progress in Human Geography, and Urban Geography. To date, as principal investigator, he has completed more than 100 tourism planning and consultation projects for famous tourism destinations in China, for instance, Huangshan, Guilin, Suzhou, Zhangjiajie, Kanas, Hunan, Hubei. He has also established 8 UNWTO Sustainable Tourism Observatories in different places of China, including Huangshan, Guilin, Zhangjiajie, Kanas, Henan, Chengdu, Xishuangbanna, and Changshu.
He serves on the editorial boards and as associate editors for several leading journals, such as Chinese Geographical Science (Associate Editor), Geographical Studies (Editorial Board Member), Journal of China Tourism Research (Regional Editor, China), Journal of Destination Marketing and Management (Editorial Board), Journal of Sustainable Tourism (Editorial Board), Scientia Geographica Sinica (Associate Editor-in-chief), Tourism Geographies (Consulting Editor), Tourism Management (Editorial Board), Tourism Science (Editorial Board Member), and Tourism Tribune (Associate Editor-in-chief).
