Edith Cowan University’s School of Business and Law invites you to the ECU Business Flashlight, a regular forum for researchers and practitioners to engage in collaborative dialogue with industry and government on relevant issues in business and management.
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an economic and foreign policy project that focuses on reviving the ancient Silk Road, which was the main trade route from China to Europe centuries ago. BRI would connect three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa; covering a total of 3.2 billion people that is almost 45% of the world population. BRI is a blueprint for China to explore co-operation with new economic partners. What does BRI mean for Australia? In this forum, the Hon. Bill Johnston MLA along with three other speakers will provide their insights and discussions on this topic.

Hon. Bill Johnston MLA: Western Australia's minister for Mines and Petroleum; Commerce and Industrial Relations; Electoral Affairs; and Asian Engagement. Bill is also the Member for Cannington, having held this position since September 2008. Prior to entering Parliament, he spent seven years as the State Secretary of WA Labor, four years as Shadow Minister for Mines and Petroleum, and five years as Shadow Energy and State Development Minister. Bill was also a former senior official of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association, where he fought for fairness for low-paid workers in industrial rights, workers compensation and working conditions.
This forum will feature the following presenters:
Ms Bonnie Shek, MBA: Director of Australia and New Zealand, of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). Before joining the HKTDC, she spent over ten years in the telecommunications industry, being responsible for developing marketing strategy and leading the Asia/Pacific consumer team. Having grown up in Hong Kong, then living in Australia now for more than two decades, Ms Shek understands the business dynamics in both places. Based in Sydney, she leads the team to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in doing business in Hong Kong/China and further enhance the good trading relationship between Hong Kong and the Australasian region.
Mr Tony Chong: A corporate and tax lawyer, with extensive finance and commercial experience. He has worked in practice and in-house across wide industries internationally. He has specific interest in adding value to businesses, and regularly promotes trade from Asia into Western Australia. He seeks to be a bridge for businesses between Australia and Asia. Tony has first hand experience with commercial businesses (private and listed entities) and with the non-profit sector. Tony is the Vice President of WA Chinese Chamber of Commerce, mentor to various community leaders under the WA Office of Multicultural Affairs board diversification mentor program. He is also a 40 under 40 winner in 2013.
