During the September school holidays over 100 Children’s University (CU) students and family members representing 18 partner schools participated in eight wonderful hands-on CU workshops across ECU’s Mount Lawley, Joondalup and Bunbury campuses.

The workshops ‘Zine Making’, ‘Creative Writing’, ‘Storybook Stop Motion’ and ‘Unfolding Our Gifts’ provided opportunities for our creative members to immerse themselves in a world of imagination and develop skills they can use in their own artistic works. By playing interactive educational video games, families learned about both the importance of Internet Safety and how to be ‘Internet Awesome’, as well as how we can care properly for their bones and joints during ‘Skeletal Central’. The justice process was examined in an entertaining way, in our ‘Mock Trial’. It was Jack v. Jill and the job of hearing the evidence and determining the outcome fell upon our members – who was guilty? Budding engineers had the chance to test their skills by designing and constructing bridges in the ‘Build A Bridge’ workshop. ECU’s South West Nursing Demonstration Ward was explored, with students investigating some essential nursing tools and equipment and learning exactly why good hand hygiene is so important.

The workshops presented are brilliant and beneficial, and our CU members say it best:

“I think that this experience was amazing, and I can’t wait to see you again!” (CU Student)

“I liked that we got to examine Jill’s story and see whether it was true in an actual court setting.” (CU Student)

“I liked that I could participate and learn while having fun.” (CU Student)

“It was very hands-on; the presenters were personable and knowledgeable. It made the experience well worthwhile, and I’d recommend CU to others.” (CU Guardian)

“I liked the uni tour, the live board of cyber-attacks and learning with my children.” (CU Guardian)

“Learning with my child & seeing how much he knows.” (CU Caregivers)

“Using medical equipment, I’ve never used before.” (CU Child)

An enormous thank you to ECU Academics and students across the School of Education, School of Engineering, the School of Business and Law, the School of Science and the School of Medical Health Science who delivered these fun and educational workshops, helping to make our CU school holiday program a huge success and supporting the program!

  • “It was a very enjoyable morning with the CU visitors, and a pleasure to work with you to deliver this opportunity to our local community. I would be more than happy to support this initiative in the future” (Workshop Presenter – SNM).
  • “It was really good to read the positive feedback from the families and children… Thanks for the opportunity to extend my own thinking and apply stop animation in a way I had not considered before” (Workshop Presenter – SED).

Special thank you to the Australian Government, The Department of Education and Training’s Higher Education Participation and Partnership’s Program (HEPPP) and the University Department of Rural Health (URDH) – South West for their generous funding and support.
