Partners in Literacy and Numeracy (PLaN) - a service learning initiative from ECU's School of Education
PLaN is an ECU School of Education initiative that allows Pre-Service Teachers to engage with schools to support the delivery of their literacy and numeracy programs.
PLaN is a service learning program designed to better prepare new teachers with the practical skills needed to be classroom ready. PLaN is not a work integrated learning experience, nor paid work, nor a volunteer role. Instead, service learning is a pedagogical approach that combines learning with community service and meets a societal need.
For Schools and Early Childhood Centres, being part of PLaN offers the opportunity of further support to literacy and numeracy programs, two critical General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum.
For a Pre-Service Teacher, participating as a PLaN member will help you to gain extra classroom exposure and the opportunity to practice your teaching skills beyond the requirements of your formal Professional Experiences (practicums). Participating in PLaN will enrich your professional understanding and practice of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Teacher Level). PLaN will also help facilitate potential employment opportunities with schools.
“To experience classrooms from the perspective of a teacher and interacting with students has been amazing. I have a much deeper understanding of what is going to be required of me as well as what I will be experiencing once I am a teacher myself”.
Tyron, Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
