During Professional Experience

Professional experience provides a valuable opportunity for Pre-Service Teachers to undertake a positive learning experience and foster collaborative relationships with mentor teachers. This invaluable experience allows for the demonstration of best practices, guided by the expertise of experienced teachers and school leaders, inspiring the next generation of teachers.

We encourage you to familiarise yourself with our Professional Experience Handbook prior to commencing your placement.  This handbook provides essential guidance and valuable insights that will enhance your understanding and preparation for professional experience.

2024 Professional Experience Handbook

Workplace Health and Safety

All workplace sites have a Workplace Health and Safety Policy and a Risk Management Policy, which Pre-Service Teachers should become familiar with during induction. Familiarise yourself with the school's emergency protocols before your professional experience placement begins.

Please refer to the Professional Experience Handbook for more information.

Insurance

All Pre-Service Teachers, whilst on Professional Experience placement are covered by ECU’s Personal Accident, Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Medical Malpractice insurance policy.

Click here for more information about Personal Injury and other claims.  Please note that personal injury insurance no longer covers Medicare "gap" expenses and an excess of $50 applies to all non-Medicare medical expenses claims.

Pre-Service Teachers may want to consider Accidental Damage insurance to protect their personal property during professional experience.

Site Incidences

If Pre-Service Teachers experience an accident at the school or early learning centre, or during a site-related activity off campus, they must report the incident and submit a Site Incident Report, to their Unit Coordinator and Professional Experience Team Leader.

In the event of whole school incidents, please contact the university as soon as possible. Our guide will help you respond to critical incidents during your professional experience.
