Annamaria is a Lecturer in the School of Education. She leads, coordinates and teaches in Primary Initial Teacher Education across Languages, EAL/D and core education units.

Background

Dr Annamaria Paolino’s research expertise is in Languages and using music to facilitate language learning. She currently leads the languages/EALD programme in the Bachelor of Education (Primary) Course.  Dr Paolino supervises HDR students in her area of expertise and together they investigate many themes centred around languages, pedagogy, the intersectionality of languages and social justice, and teacher education. Dr Paolino holds a leadership position in the School of Education as the 3rd Year Coordinator for the Bachelor of Education – Primary course.

Prior to becoming an academic, Dr Paolino was a Level 3 teacher and school leader. She was a Music and Italian specialist and taught these areas in a variety of contexts in her teaching career including primary, secondary, tertiary and online/remote settings.

Research

Dr Paolino’s research is contextualised in social constructivism. She is an experienced qualitative researcher and is leading research collaborations with colleagues at Edith Cowan University and The University of Leeds. Some of her current projects include:

  • Using Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to teach Languages in Primary Initial Teacher Education
  • Using metaphors to investigate pre-service teacher beliefs about their language learning
  • Exploring pre-service teachers’ dispositions for culturally sustaining pedagogy through field experience
