Project - Engineered Timber Connections

Engineered timber, particularly Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), is a sustainable and versatile construction material. LVL's unidirectional grain arrangement provides high strength but limits its loading capacity to a single direction. This research investigates the structural behaviour of engineered Tenon and Mortise Connections (TMC) for LVL members under monotonic and cyclic loads. TMCs are widely used in frames and trusses but lack comprehensive design standards, particularly for traditional carpentry joints.

The study aims to evaluate the strength, stiffness, and ductility of various TMC configurations while identifying their failure modes. Experimental tests will assess the performance of different geometrical setups, propose optimal dimensions, and explore enhancements to mitigate failure mechanisms. Analytical results will be compared with Australian and European standards to validate findings.

Additionally, finite element models will be developed using software like ANSYS to simulate stress distributions and predict performance accurately. The outcomes will provide insights into the fracture mechanics of TMCs and propose strengthening techniques based on failure patterns.

By integrating experimental and numerical analyses, this research will establish a framework for improving the design of timber connections, addressing current knowledge gaps, and advancing sustainable construction practices. The findings will not only contribute to safer and more efficient timber connections but also set a foundation for future studies in engineered timber applications.
