Project - Developing novel photocatalysts and photocatalytic membranes (PMs) to efficiently remove microplastics (MPs), PFAS, and other emerging contaminants from water

Microplastics (MPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging pollutants with increasing global concern. Photocatalytic degradation, an advanced oxidation process (AOP), offers an eco-friendly approach for their removal by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), known for their diverse structures and porosities, exhibit promising photocatalytic properties. This study focuses on synthesizing Fe-based MOFs with varying characteristics and also in composite forms to assess their photodegradation efficiency. The fabrication process will avoid costly and hazardous materials to ensure sustainability.

Finally, polymeric membranes will be modified with the optimized photocatalyst to evaluate improvements in hydrophilicity, permeability, antifouling properties, and pollutant removal efficiency. Throughout the study, the primary objective is to develop simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly synthesis routes, ensuring sustainability while enhancing the degradation performance of emerging pollutants.
