Purpose in life: Its cognitive and affective mechanisms and relationship to anxiety and depression

Student name:

Louis Fang (PhD candidate)

Supervisors:

  1. Professor Joanne Dickson
  2. Emeritus Professor Alfred Allan

Summary of thesis:

Purpose in life is a crucial aspect  of wellbeing, yet the current understanding of this construct remains limited, impeding the development of interventions that target purpose in life effectively. To address this gap in literature the current program of research is guided by three overarching aims (1) To establish a theoretically derived and empirically supported understanding of purpose in life, (2) to understand the relationship between purpose in life and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and (3) to determine if and how purpose in life can be altered to reduce anxiety and depression.
