Treating and alleviating the symptoms of cancer is a focal research area within the School of Medical and Health Sciences at ECU.
Our state-of-the-art molecular biology laboratories and our close collaborations with clinicians and pathologists across Australia allows our melanoma research team to design novel methods for early identification and monitoring of treatment responsiveness of melanoma patients. Blood biomarkers are also being developed for the early identification of other cancers including breast, ovarian, lung, brain and prostate cancers.
Our liver cancer team are examining the role of disturbed iron metabolism in cancer and the processes which occur in the liver as a result of injury which lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Research from the Collaborative Genomics and Translation group is focusing on the application of a precision health model for more effective, personalised solutions.
The Exercise Medicine Research Institute is a cross-disciplinary alliance of research centres and expertise with extensive national and international linkages that is leading research into the beneficial role of exercise during the treatment of prostate, breast and lung cancers.
