Extension of the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre (DCRC) funding

This Dementia Collaborative Research Centre, led by the Australian National University (ANU), will coordinate, undertake, facilitate and promote reviews and research within the area of early diagnosis and prevention. The centre’s partner organisations include the Australian National University alongside Alzheimer's Australia Victoria, Edith Cowan University, University of Canberra, The Mental Health Research Institute, Austin Health and the University of Queensland.

During 2010-2013, members of DCRC - Early Diagnosis and Prevention, will undertake a number of projects within two streams of research:

Stream 1 - Early Detection and Diagnosis

Areas of priority:

  • development of early, accurate biomarkers of dementia;
  • integration of cognitive, imaging and sample biomarkers in the early diagnostic process;
  • design and acceptability of self screening tool; and
  • design and facilitation of key intervention studies.

Stream 2 - Risk Reduction and Prevention

Areas of priority:

  • establishment and maintenance of up-to-date evidence base of dementia risk factors;
  • implementation of intervention studies;
  • provision of evidence and educational tools to the public and health professionals;
  • development of tools to model the impact of risk factor reduction in dementia; and
  • development of public health policy framework for promotion, prevention, early intervention.
