Improving how we measure aerosol exposure

Many people work in environments where aerosols, such as dust, are created, and sometimes the type and amount of aerosol can lead to harm.  To work out if exposure to aerosols is problematic Occupational Hygienists conduct surveys to measure the aerosols which are then used in their risk assessments.  A wide variety of measurement techniques are available, and the Occupational Hygienist is trained to identify which techniques are most suitable for specific workplace situations.

The technology used to measure aerosols is advancing, however, the approved measurement processes have not kept up to date with these developments.

The International Sampler Comparison Group has been established to coordinate independent research in the devices used to measure exposure, and the techniques Occupational Hygienists use to measure exposure.

The ISCG are a group of International experts who have agreed to:

  1. Develop a research plan (short / medium / long-term) for future laboratory and workplace-based studies, which will allow the assessment of the performance of aerosol sampling heads.
  2. Identify external funding support to allow for elements of the research plan to be funded.
  3. Where funds for research activities are made available through the ISCG, act as a steering committee for that project.
  4. Engage and involve other stakeholders who are interested in the activities of the ISCG.
  5. Communicate findings from ISCG’s work openly (e.g., via publications, workshops, conference presentations etc) so that the wider community can benefit from the learning.

This website provides information about the ISCG and its responses to these agreements.   As a core member of the ISCG, ECU is pleased to host this website.
