Hugh is the Director Simulation Learning, Lecturer and Researcher in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The position involves the teaching of subject materials to students, scholarly activities related to research initiatives and administrative duties associated with unit coordination.

Background

Dr Hugh Davies has over twenty five years’ clinical experience in the area of critical care nursing. His experience includes:

  • Care of patients requiring mechanical support for respiratory failure including advanced ventilation strategies and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.
  • Care of neurological patients following surgical intervention to remove tumours or blood clots.
  • Casualties from trauma secondary to motor vehicle accidents, injuries from workplace accidents, episodes of self-harm or as victims of physical assault.
  • Care of patients immediately after heart and lung transplantation.
  • Care of patients requiring intra-aortic balloon pump therapy and ventricular assist devices secondary to cardiac failure.
  • Infusion of fluids and vasopressors for septic patients and the administration of intravenous antibiotic cover.
  • Care of patients with acute kidney injury who required continuous renal replacement therapy.
  • Administration of fluids for patients who have been victims of severe burns.
  • Management of drug induced “psychotic” patients.
  • Provision of emotional support to critically ill patients and families of loved-ones.
