Stay Cyber Safe presented the 2023 Western Australia Cyber Security Awards as part of this years Cyber West Summit. Several categories and winners were announced on the night including WA Cyber Security Educator of the Year. The award recognises someone who has made a significant contribution educating the community about cyber security. Congratulations goes to Dr Michelle Ellis from Edith Cowan University for being the 2023 WA Cyber Security Educator of the Year.

Dr Michelle Ellis is the Outreach and Engagement Coordinator for the School of Science: Computing and Security discipline. Her role includes running and hosting workshops for high school students (local and regional), however, Michelle manages to include teachers, educators, parents, and anyone from the broader community. Whilst these events are geared to promoting careers in cybersecurity, they are also a mixture of cyber awareness and cyber safety. The success of the program lies with ECU’s university students who, after some training, deliver these sessions sharing their university pathway, acting as a mentor, being advocates for the industry and role models.  It is this universal program that Michelle is being recognised for. #ChampionsCreatingChampions.

Michelle and her team of ECU Ambassadors (and alumni) have developed one such cyber educational initiative that has gained national recognition - PECAN+CTF. This event now in its 5th year has grown from being a Perth and Canberra event for high school students to now include Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Wollongong. PECAN+CTF is different to other CTF competitions in that it is held on a TAFE or University campus; it’s a face-to-face teaching and learning event; it engages university and TAFE students to develop their technical and non-technical skills; and it is a collaboration between education, industry, and government.

This year’s PECAN+CTF is sponsored by Australian Signals Directorate, Tesserent, City of Joondalup, Yira Yakiny, Seamless Intelligence, Office of Digital Government, KineticIT, Altrium and WhiteRook Cyber. In addition, at each location we also have the Cyber Nodes such as Canberra Cyber Hub, AustCyber South Australia and Tasmania and Cyber West sponsoring T-shirts.  For more information go to - https://pecanplus.ecusri.org

Congratulations Michelle Ellis for your amazing work.
