Overview of thesis

My research is investigating the perceptions of bushfire by those that live within the bushfire risk zone, as defined by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Remnant patches of bushland that remains throughout the Perth metropolitan area are all considered to be at risk of a bushfire, including also a 100-metre buffer zone around the perimeter of the bushland. This 100-meter buffer zone often includes residential land use.

The perceptions of bushfire risk for people residing in proximity to bushland in peri-urban and rural landscapes is relatively understood, however little research has been done for the residents within a metropolitan area. My study aims to gain an understanding of their perceptions and seek to inform bushland management strategies, and provide guidance on how to live with bushland without losing conservation values.
