Axel Werner

Overview of thesis

My project aims to reconstruct environmental change using natural archives for effective management. Core samples from the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, will be analysed to assess triggers and thresholds of nutrients resulting in algal blooms, as well as determining the natural ecological trends before major anthropogenic impacts. Core samples from peatlands in Galicia, Spain, will be analysed for glomalin (heatshock protein found in terrestrial soils), to determine if glomalin is a valid proxy to detect land-use change using peatland soil archives.
