Overview of thesis

My PhD research projects aim is to find a new method to protect liver in the period of liver surgery, which suffered by acute (ischemia and reperfusion (I/R)) injury. My PhD project is part of collaboration between ECU and Shantou University Medical College, Guangdong, China.

I/R injury in liver surgeries are associated with post-operative morbidity and mortality, and I/R injury as a major unresolved problem in clinical practice. The inflammasome plays an important role in the pathogenesis of liver I/R injury and has been identified as a major contributor to amplification of liver inflammation. Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR) is the master regulator of bile acid homeostasis and can inhibit Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress-induced inflammasome activation in hepatocytes. Therefore, we hypothesise that if FXR can be activated in the early stages after hepatic surgery, it may reduce the effect of inflammation so as to reduce I/R injury and resultant post-operative morbidity and mortality.
